Cheap conference calls - How we (don't) make our money

Many people ask us how we make money by offering cheap conferencing calling facilities at such low prices. The truth is, we don't make money on this service! But, that's OK because we don't need to. Here's why.

In the UK, all cheap conference call providers which use access phone numbers beginning with 08, usually 0844, 0870 or 0871 and operate a business model called "revenue sharing" which works like this.

When you call into the cheap audio conference provider's 08xx access number your phone company (BT, NTL, Virgin etc) charges you for a the call. The phone company keeps some of the money and passes some of the money onto the cheap conference call provider in commission.

The amount of commission varies by number range. 0871 numbers pay the most followed by 0870, 0844 and 0845 numbers.

We use the cheapest 0845 number range to ensure that our cheap audio conference calls are, in fact, THE CHEAPEST cheap audio conferences available.

The commission we get paid for using an 0845 access number is tiny - a fraction of a penny a minute. We spend much more money on promoting our cheap conference calls than we could ever hope to get back in commission.

So, why do we do it?

There are two reasons for providing cheap conference calls at what amounts to a loss.

The first answer is 'because we can' and it's a good thing to do for everyone. By providing an extremely low cost no-commitment route for people to experiment with audio conferencing in their business, we are helping to take cars off the road and planes out of the sky.
